Wayne State University Teams up with Comcast to Offer Housing Students ‘Xfinity On Campus’

Wayne State University is making it more attractive to live in the dorms by offering students video service as part of their room and board. Comcast’s Xfinity On Campus service lets on-campus housing students watch live TV, on demand and recorded content on their IP-enabled devices, including laptops, tablets and smartphones.

“Today’s tech-savvy campus residents value services that conform to their ‘on-the-go’ and ‘in the moment’ lifestyles,” said Tim Michael, associate vice president for student services and WSU’s chief housing officer. “Last year, we piloted Xfinity On Campus with one residential learning community. The students found it to be a robust streaming service that was easy to use and take with them as they moved around the campus. Concurrent with a major upgrade this summer to our campus wireless network, all housing residents will now be able to enjoy the selection, service and flexibility that Xfinity On Campus provides. It’s one more way at WSU that we make our students feel connected and at home.”

Xfinity On Campus also provides an added benefit to compete with off-campus housing.

“Once considered primarily a commuter college, Wayne State is now attracting more students seeking to live downtown and on campus, particularly with Detroit’s phenomenal resurgence,” said Jason Gumbs, vice president of Sales and Marketing for Comcast in Michigan. “Dorm housing demand and availability are going up, and our service provides a value-add for students living in the dorms.”

Xfinity On Campus offers more than 100 live channels including every major broadcast network, as well as channels like AMC, Bravo, ESPN, FX and MTV through Comcast’s Xfinity Stream app and portal. The service also includes access to thousands of current season TV shows and hit movies via Xfinity On Demand. While off campus, students can use the Xfinity Stream app to log in and access TV Everywhere programming that’s part of their subscription.

Students can also upgrade their Xfinity On Campus accounts to include a selection of premium channels, including HBO, Showtime and STARZ, as well as the Sports Entertainment Package.

Xfinity On Campus provides an opportunity to introduce a younger audience to Xfinity X1— Comcast’s next-generation video product currently enjoyed by residential customers throughout the nation. Xfinity X1 delivers an immersive and personalized entertainment experience across all devices in an interface that is sleek, intuitive and makes search and discovery of content easier than ever.

Xfinity On Campus is easy and cost-effective for a university’s IT department to maintain. To register for the service, students can visit https://comca.st/2MT4WaF, type in their school name and authenticate with their student user name and password. Once registered, students can watch their programming anytime by downloading the Xfinity Stream app or by visiting https://comca.st/2MT4WHH and logging in with their student credentials.
