Max Bogacz, who attends Central Michigan University and graduates in December 2017 with a Bachelor’s degree in Entrepreneurship and Marketing, spent 12 weeks working with our Marketing department. He shares his insights and gives other students an inside look into what it was like to work for Comcast.
1.How did you find this internship?
My dad mentioned it while I was looking for jobs during the second semester of school. I checked out the Comcast Career page and saw a bunch of internships. I originally applied for an internship in the fulfillment department. I talked to HR a week later and was told I didn’t get the job but a Marketing Analyst internship just popped up and she said it was right up my alley. I applied and talked to Meghan Kern (my current boss) about the position. Two weeks later I got a message saying I got the job! I was so excited for it, everything worked out so the job I wanted and needed just opened up at the right time.
2. What is your favorite aspect of working with Comcast so far throughout your internship?
Comcast offers a lot of amazing opportunities and benefits like taking us to events, dinners, and even giving us a chance to experience the Comcast suite at Comerica Park for a Tigers game. But the best part I find is the actual work itself that the company provides us. I have learned so much with Excel capabilities such as graphing, pivot tables, Vlookups, market penetration targeting and so on. The tasks I am given every day have been building myself up to constantly improve and learn from every situation. Everything I have learned I can continue to use in my future career and that’s what I love about working here.
3. What are some examples of the hands-on work you get to do through your internship experience with Comcast?
I had the opportunity to work with some cross functional teams and participate in the launch of a new organization that many Comcasters are a part of called NAMIC Detroit. I was able to help organize and facilitate the launch event with a great team of people. Working alongside different departments on a day-to-day basis in the Marketing department, I got to see what is offered, how to approach a certain task, and how to avoid any issues that can occur. I have never put myself into a situation like that, so everything felt new and I really liked that aspect.
4. How do you feel this internship has equipped you with skills you can utilize in your future career after graduation?
I feel that I have a much sturdier foundation now when I go to apply for jobs after graduation. Having this experience makes me feel more confident in what I can bring to the table with my future employers. My potential employment opportunities are a lot better now because Comcast is such a largely known company that it will catch the eye of an employer. Also, without a doubt all the skills I have learned through this internship and networking contacts I have made have better equipped me for my future career. Everyone I’ve come across here at Comcast is so willing to connect with you and even reach out to their connections and introduce you. The opportunities for networking are endless, which is invaluable to a young professional like myself.
5. Any advice for other students searching for an internship?
If you are struggling to find an internship like I did or even get a company to notice your resume, you have to do some extracurricular work to attract a business. The last six summers, I never worked at an office job. I worked in construction – building house, decks, and landscaping. This basically meant I had zero corporate skills before this internship. I got this internship because of what I did during the school year. I joined a venture competition through my university where I created a business and networked with people. This project that I did during school was what attracted Comcast to my resume. If you have nothing professional on your resume related to what you want to do, then you have to go out and do something. Join a club, start club, participate in university events offered for your major, whatever you choose to do – just put yourself out there and start working. Once you gain skills from that opportunity, you can put it on your resume and that makes you so much more desirable for employers. If you show that you are making an effort to learn, even if you haven’t had a job opportunity yet, it just might make an employer want to offer you your first professional job opportunity. It only takes one foot in the door to secure a career.
